Modern houses built on Roman walls c. 100 b.c. Plovdiv 2009 MINING NEWS October 2009 Active mining continues on reduced scale in the district. In Madan, the Kruchev dol and Petrovitza Mines are operating. Laki has two operating mines with the Drujba and Djurkovo properties. In Zlatograd the Gjudurska and Androvo Mines are active. The best and truly fantastic galena specimens that were coming out of one block of ground in the Kruchev dol Mine are gone. This block of ground is mined out and the stope finished. Minerals from here will be available from stashes for the forseeable future. The Kruchev dol, Petrovitza and Gjudurska Mines are producing most of the best material. Laki is still very quiet with little or no specimens being produced.

It produced a nice variety of secondary minerals including witherite and some good calcites. Mined 1999-2001. 1.5 x 1.5 x 2.5 cm.

SOUTH-END, MOGILA MINE, DEVETI SEPTEMVRI COMPLEX, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Miniature) Great little miniature of well modified cubic galena complete on all sides and perched on a thin plate of drusy quartz. Very aesthetic from any angle and in great condition. There is a small spot that looks damaged (center of lower photo) but the luster on the surface of the main crystals and this spot have the same luster. So, it is either natural and caused from pocket movement, or, it is a ding and took the same luster when it was cleaned. In either case it is still a very nice miniature from workings mined c. 1970s. 3.2 x 3.2 x 4.4 cm.

The luster on the crystals is not the best seen from the mine but it is more than accounted for by the superb hoppered crystals and two types of twinning found on the piece. Namely, Spinel and Penetration Law Twins. Mined in 2008 and in great condition. 7.5 x 9 x 11 cm.

NSMW9240 GALENA ON QUARTZ PRICE: $SOLD MOGILA MINE, DEVETI SEPTEMVRI COMPLEX, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Small/medium cabinet) Hoppered galena on a mound of quartz. I like this specimen because the galena is isolated and so sharply defined against the quartz. Mined from workings in the 1960s. There is some damage to the quartz (lower left of top photo) but the galena is what matters and it is in perfect shape except for two micro nicks along the edges. 5 x 7 x 8 cm.

K0NSKI DOL MINE (ANGEL IANAKIEV), MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Small/medium cabinet) Simple galena octahedron with cubic modifications and associated quartz, black sphalerite and chalcopyrite. Single crystals are rare from the district and this one is complete on all sides making it even more unusual. One ding on the edge of the galena (see lower photo at center) but since the specimen can be oriented in a variety of angles it can be shown without it being visible. The surface of the crystals is preferentially etched and gives the faces a sparkly appearance when displayed. From the great stopes of 2008. In great condition. 5 x 7 x 9 cm.
NSMW9213 GALENA PRICE: $850. GJUDURSKA MINE, ZLATOGRAD DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Small/medium cabinet) The Gjudurska Mine is the pre-eminent producer in the Zlatograd section of the district. In the middle of 2009 a stope was developed that uncovered some of the finest galena crystals ever seen from Bulgaria. The specimens were combinations of cube and octahedron with hoppered faces with fantastic luster and sharpness. This piece is from that great find and is a medium cabinet in size. There is one small ding near the bottom center that could be either man-made or natural where it contacted another crystal group. Super presentation and otherwise in great condition. 5 x 7.5 x 11 cm.

NSMW9210 GALENA AND QUARTZ PRICE: $250. BLOCK 22, LEVEL 450/550, KRUCHEV DOL MINE, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Small cabinet) Mounded group of galena with associated quartz. The galena crystals are cubic but with excellent secondary foroms on the faces that give them a stepped appearance. In addition, on close examination the crystals have numerous concave indentations that indicate fluid inclusions. Very nice and highly unusual miniature from mining in 2007 and in great condition. 3.5 x 6 x 6 cm.

NSMW9208 AMETHSYT PRICE: $220. DRUJBA MINE, LAKI DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Small cabinet) Nice purple amethyst on regular colorless quartz. There were several of these specimens available a few years ago but they have essentially disappeared from the market. Amethsyt is actually quite rare in terms of numbers from the district. I like this piece because the amethyst crystals dominate the piece in terms of size (5 cm) and color. Mined 2006. In great condition. 5.5 x 6 x 7 cm.

The matrix is green and quite similar to that found in the Konski dol Mine which produced fantastic galenas some years ago. Natural crack through pyrite but does no effect competence. 3.5 x 5 x 6 cm.

GJUDURSKA MINE, ZLATOGRAD DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Miniature/small cabinet) Exceptionally bright, silvery metallic galena with superb flat faces and form. These were mined from a unique pocket that produced some of the best galena ever seen from the country. In great condition. Mined mid-2009. There is a hair-line crack in the back which I stabilized with super glue. It never separated but is purely preventative. 4 x 6 x 9 cm.

SOUTH-END, MOGILA MINE, DEVETI SEPTEMVRI COMPLEX, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Medium cabinet) The Deveti Septemvri Complex was mined by two separate entrances, namely, the Osikovo and the Mogila Mines. Material from the two operations is similar in many ways but also has some subtle differences and in some cases are unique to each end of the deposit. This specimen is classic from the Mogila mine as these medium brown sphalerites on quartz matrix are typical of this section. Fine display specimen of sphalerite from miningc. 1990. KRUCHEV DOL MINE, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Medium cabinet) Diska of light pastel pink manganoan calcite liberally grouped over prismatic quartz matrix. The Kruchev dol is the finest location in Madan for this species from active mining operations. Nice coverage and an attractive specimen from mining in 2008. NSMW7832 QUARTZ var. Japanese-Law Twin PRICE: $350. KRUCHEV DOL MINE, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA Japan Law twins are rare from the district. Only a hand full are found every two to three years. Most of them are small twins that sort of disappear on the matrix and blend in with the background. This one does not and in fact stands up off the base crystals and is accentuated by a black sphalerite with a chalcopyrite perched right at the twin plane. From new mining in 2007. Moderate damage to some of the associated crystals but the twin is in great condition with only a tiny nick along one tip. Twin 3 x 3.5 cm and 4 cm across point to point. 6.5 x 8 x 10.5 cm.

NSMW7605 SPHALERITE PRICE: $225. MOGILA MINE, DEVETI SEPTEMVRI COMPLEX, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA Olive/brown sphalerites perched on quartz matrix. The sphalerites are sharply twinned with sharp re-entrant angles and have one of the more rare colors from the mine. The Mogila Mine is one of the most famous and important operations from the district and with the sister mine across the hill, the Osikovo Mine, comprise the finest ore body in the district. This is an older specimen mined c. 1970s. In top condition. 3 x 6 x 10 cm.

NSMW6835 SPHALERITE ON QUARTZ PRICE: $85. BORIEVA MINE, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA The Borieva Mine is one of the premier locations in Bulgaria that is active. The best specimens coming out seem to be sphalerites in combination with quartz and galena. High luster sphalerites, to 2 cm, in combination with transparent quartz make a great contrast and a very aesthetic specimen from new mining in 2006. In top condition. 2.5 x 6 x 7 cm.
NSMW6786 WURTZITE PRICE: $650. PTCHELOJAD MINE, EASTERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA The Ptchelojad Mine is most famous for pyromorphites that were produced in some quantity several years ago. This is the first occurrence of wurtzite I have seen from this locality. Wurtzite is a pure end-member of the sphalerite group and is trimorphous with matraite and sphalerite. Chemical composition is this case is ZnS at 99.998%. The color is a yellow/green and the form aggregates of balls and crusts. It is exceptionally rare from Bulgaria and would compliment any rare mineral suite or in-depth Bulgarian collection. Mined 2003. No faults. 5.5 x 8 x 13 cm.
