MINING NEWS

May 2008

Active mining continues in Madan with the Kruchev dol, Borieva and South Petrovitsa ore bodies mining two shifts/day. Laki has two operating mines with the Drujba and Djurkovo properties. In Zlatograd the Androvo Mine is active.

The best and truly fantastic galena specimens continue to come out of the Kruchev dol Mine. Superb manganoan calcites are available from Androvo and there are some exceptionally fine amethysts from Djurkovo.

This is perhaps one of the last and best chances to be collecting newly mined Bulgarian minerals!

NSMW7977       ROMANECHITE    PRICE: $65.

KREMICOVTZI MINE,  near SOFIA, BULGARIA

The Kremicovtzi Mine was an open pit iron mine that closed a couple of years ago and it was not well known for specimens as pockets were few and far between, however, it produced an abundance of species many of them exceptionally rare. This is a small/medium cabinet specimen of one of the major ores in the mine and it shows the massive ore matrix with crystallized botryoidal surfaces. Mined c. 2000. 5 x 5 x 9 cm.

NSMW7978       WITHERITE     PRICE: $650.

There was only one occurrence of these witherites that was found and they never were found again. Pieces are exceptionally rare on the market as local collectors really are reluctant to part with them and the pocket only produced about 50 pieces or so. This is a very fine small cabinet displaying typical ball-like forms to 1.5 cm with good luster and rich tan color. Great coverage and in top condition. Mined c. 1999. 3 x 6 x 8 cm.

The Kremikovtzi Mine was an open pit iron mine a few miles from Sofia in northwest Bulgaria. The mine had been active for decades but specimens were few and far between and coveted by local collectors whenever pockets turned up. However, it is home to many different species and occasionally produced some excellent crystallized specimens such as a locally famous find of witherites in a series of pockets from 1999-2001. This is a small cabinet specimen of the typical ball shaped groups of bladed crystals. In excellent condition. Fluorescent tan color and briefly phosphorescent. 2 x 4.5 x 6 cm.

ANDROVO MINE, ERMA REKA, ZLATOGRAD DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA

Beautiful undulating plate of bright and very lustrous, pastel/pink crystals of manganoan calcite. Specimens of this size are rare especially when of this high quality. The specimen displays very well with great coverage across the surface of crystals typically to 1.5-3 cm. The stopes that produced these specimens are mined out and according to the miners and local dealers the occurrence is finished for this time. Maybe they will find more pockets and maybe not. MOGILA MINE, DEVETI SEPTEMVRI COMPLEX, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA

Rhombic manganoan calcites stacked up in a curved form with associated quartz and micro sphalerites. The calcite appears to be partially replaced by a later carbonate as is typical of so many of these later-stage minerals. There must have been a lot of fluid movement within the vein systems. It is possible that this is a rhodochrosite as well. Mined c. 1960s from the great days of the mine. An excellent specimen. 7 x 11 x 13 cm.

NSMW7636    GALENA AND PYRITE WITH QUARTZ  PRICE: $220.

MOGILA MINE, DEVETI SEPTEMVRI COMPLEX, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA

The Mogila Mine was one of two adits that penetrated the mountain that housed a vein system that proved to be the riches and most productive in the district. Thousands of superb specimens were produced for over 40 years from this system. This piece was collected from the great producing days of the mine when a wide variety of minerals were coming out. The carbonate is pseudomorphous and likely a dolomitic variety after calcite. Classic platy and hoppered galenas contrast well with bright and brassy pyrites. Mined c. 1960s. 5 x 8 x 14 cm.

NSMW7626       QUARTZ AFTER CALCITE      PRICE: $45.
