Modern houses built on Roman walls c. 100 b.c. Plovdiv 2009 MINING NEWS March 2010 In November of 2009 an amazing pocket of galena was found in the Gjudurska Mine. The luster is the finest I have ever seen with mirror sheen on silvery metallic cube/octahedron crystals. The pocket also had stalactitic galena forms with associated bladed calcite. A unique find in Madan. Also, there are a number of other fine pyrites coming to market and some excellent rounded galenas with associated sphalerite. Clearly, the action now is in the Gjudurska Mine. A unique pocket of hematite-included calcite with associated pyrite was found in the Kruchev dol and the Borieva Complex is producing some sharp, tetrahedral shaped black sphalerite. Overll, though, Madan is finding only sporadic pockets. Laki is still very slow in terms of specimens.

The pyrites are well formed pyritohedrons with striated faces. A couple of dings toward the bottom end that are not visible when displayed. Mined 2009. 4 x 6 x 7.5 cm.
NSMW9383 QUARTZ AFTER CALCITE WITH BARITE PRICE: $125. ANDROVO MINE, ERMA REKA, ZLATOGRAD DISTRICT, SMOLYAN OBLAST, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Small/medium cabinet) Rounded balls of calcite replaced by drusy quartz and some banded chalcedony-like material on one end. The specimen is shaped like an irregular bowl and has barite crystals on the reverse. Mined 2009. In great condition. 4 x 8 x 11 cm.
NSMW9381 GALENA AND SPHALERITE WITH QUARTZ PRICE: $500. CENTRAL PETROVITZA MINE, BORIEVA COMPLEX, MADAN DISTRICT, SMOLYAN OBLAST, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Medium cabinet) Combination of galena and sphalerite with semi-transparent quartz. The galena crystals are cubes modified by octahedron with some hoppered faces. The galena has a spotted appearance and at first glance it looks pockmarked but in fact there are numerous black sphalerites just inter-grown on the surface. A unique specimen in my experience. Mined 2009. Tiny nick on one crystal I did not see until I looked at the crystals with 10X loupe. 4 x 11 x 13 cm.

Nice size variation with some crystals to 3.5 cm across. A couple of dings but still an impressive pyrite from this famous location. 3.5 x 4.5 x 6.5 cm.

A very rare specimen from this mine and in fact the only one I have ever seen. It looks pseudomorphic as well and may in fact be rhodochrosite after manganoan calcite. Mined 2009. NSMW9327 BARITE PRICE: $35. KREMIKOVTZI MINE, 15 KM NORTHEAST OF SOFIA, BULGARIA (TN) Stalactitic spire of lustrous brown barite. This mine is an old iron quarry that was closed a few years ago. It produced a nice variety of secondary minerals including witherite and some good calcites. Mined 1999-2001. 1.5 x 1.5 x 2.5 cm.

SOUTH-END, MOGILA MINE, DEVETI SEPTEMVRI COMPLEX, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Miniature) Great little miniature of well modified cubic galena complete on all sides and perched on a thin plate of drusy quartz. Very aesthetic from any angle and in great condition. There is a small spot that looks damaged (center of lower photo) but the luster on the surface of the main crystals and this spot have the same luster. So, it is either natural and caused from pocket movement, or, it is a ding and took the same luster when it was cleaned. In either case it is still a very nice miniature from workings mined c. 1970s. 3.2 x 3.2 x 4.4 cm.

Single crystals are rare from the district and this one is complete on all sides making it even more unusual. One ding on the edge of the galena (see lower photo at center) but since the specimen can be oriented in a variety of angles it can be shown without it being visible. The surface of the crystals is preferentially etched and gives the faces a sparkly appearance when displayed. From the great stopes of 2008. In great condition. 5 x 7 x 9 cm.
NSMW9213 GALENA PRICE: $850. ON APPROVAL GJUDURSKA MINE, ZLATOGRAD DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Small/medium cabinet) The Gjudurska Mine is the pre-eminent producer in the Zlatograd section of the district. In the middle of 2009 a stope was developed that uncovered some of the finest galena crystals ever seen from Bulgaria. The specimens were combinations of cube and octahedron with hoppered faces with fantastic luster and sharpness. This piece is from that great find and is a medium cabinet in size. There is one small ding near the bottom center that could be either man-made or natural where it contacted another crystal group. Super presentation and otherwise in great condition. 5 x 7.5 x 11 cm.

The galena crystals are cubic but with excellent secondary foroms on the faces that give them a stepped appearance. In addition, on close examination the crystals have numerous concave indentations that indicate fluid inclusions. Very nice and highly unusual miniature from mining in 2007 and in great condition. 3.5 x 6 x 6 cm.
NSMW9208 AMETHSYT PRICE: $220. DRUJBA MINE, LAKI DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Small cabinet) Nice purple amethyst on regular colorless quartz. There were several of these specimens available a few years ago but they have essentially disappeared from the market. Amethsyt is actually quite rare in terms of numbers from the district. I like this piece because the amethyst crystals dominate the piece in terms of size (5 cm) and color. Mined 2006. In great condition. 5.5 x 6 x 7 cm.

KRUCHEV DOL MINE, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Miniature/small cabinet) Fresh and bright combination of brassy pyrite and silvery metallic galena with calcite. The matrix is green and quite similar to that found in the Konski dol Mine which produced fantastic galenas some years ago. Natural crack through pyrite but does no effect competence. 3.5 x 5 x 6 cm.

GJUDURSKA MINE, ZLATOGRAD DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Miniature/small cabinet) Exceptionally bright, silvery metallic galena with superb flat faces and form. These were mined from a unique pocket that produced some of the best galena ever seen from the country. In great condition. Mined mid-2009. There is a hair-line crack in the back which I stabilized with super glue. It never separated but is purely preventative. 4 x 6 x 9 cm.
NSMW9148 SPHALERITE AND QUARTZ PRICE: $125. SOUTH-END, MOGILA MINE, DEVETI SEPTEMVRI COMPLEX, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA (Medium cabinet) The Deveti Septemvri Complex was mined by two separate entrances, namely, the Osikovo and the Mogila Mines. Material from the two operations is similar in many ways but also has some subtle differences and in some cases are unique to each end of the deposit. This specimen is classic from the Mogila mine as these medium brown sphalerites on quartz matrix are typical of this section. Fine display specimen of sphalerite from miningc. 1990. Only a hand full are found every two to three years. Most of them are small twins that sort of disappear on the matrix and blend in with the background. This one does not and in fact stands up off the base crystals and is accentuated by a black sphalerite with a chalcopyrite perched right at the twin plane. From new mining in 2007. LEVEL 450/500, BLOCK 22, KRUCHEV DOL MINE, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA New mining has produced a very fine pocket of transparent gemmy quartz crystals in combination with galena. This is a fine miniature from the new find with great aesthetics and din top condition. Mined 2007 around September. 3.5 x 3.5 x 7 cm.
NSMW7558 CHALCOPYRITE AND SPHALERITE PRICE: $125. KRUCHEV DOL MINE, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA Brassy metallic chalcopyrite, 3 cm, perched on high luster, black sphalerite. There are a few later-stage sphalerites imbedded in the surface of the chalcopyrite that add good contrast. This is a very fine undamaged and quite large single chalcopyrite from new mining in 2007. 4.5 x 5 x 7.5 cm.
NSMW7407 GALENA PRICE: $45. KRUCHEV DOL MINE, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA The Kruchev dol is producing fantastic spinel twins at this time, but, oddly enough, fine unmodified cubic crystals are rare. This is a group of high luster cubic crystals with no modifications with a quartz matrix. Mined in 2006. No damage. 2.5 x 4 x 6.5 cm.
NSMW7404 GALENA AND QUARTZ PRICE: $125. KRUCHEV DOL MINE, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA The Kruchev dol Mine is producing some of the finest galenas Madan has ever seen. These crystals are twinned on the spinel law with rounded surfaces from dissolution and re-growth. The overall effect makes the galena appear as liquid silver. NSMW7392 AGATE PRICE: $65. GORNA KULA VILLAGE, near KARDJALI CITY, RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA Agates from this locality are normally shaded in gray and white with fine tight banding n small nodules. This specimen, however, is exceptionally fine with light tans and and light grays with excellent size and beautiful full banding through-out. Very choice from this classic Bulgarian location. Polished face 5 x 6 cm.

NSMW6956 PYRITE AND GALENA WITH QUARTZ PRICE: $250. KRUCHEV DOL MINE, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA Beautiful combination of absolutely clear quartz with brassy, striated pyrites and slate gray galena. Fine pyrites are difficult to obtain in such pristine condition as are such fine quality quartz. The galenas are matte lustered and contrast very well with the brilliant pyrite and quartz. Mined December 2006 from a series of fantastic pockets in the mine. One damaged quartz on one edge of piece but otherwise in top condition. 5.5 x 7 x 10 cm.
NSMW6835 SPHALERITE ON QUARTZ PRICE: $85. BORIEVA MINE, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA The Borieva Mine is one of the premier locations in Bulgaria that is active. The best specimens coming out seem to be sphalerites in combination with quartz and galena. High luster sphalerites, to 2 cm, in combination with transparent quartz make a great contrast and a very aesthetic specimen from new mining in 2006. In top condition. 2.5 x 6 x 7 cm.
NSMW6688 GALENA AND SPHALERITE PRICE: $850. KRUCHEV DOL MINE, MADAN DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA Sharp, silvery/metallic cubic galena crystals richly overgrown on black sphalerite. The galenas are in some cases modified by slight beveling on the octahedron and a few have the classic 'dimples' on the surface caused by fluid inclusions. Fine three dimensional form and in top condition. Excellent group of essentially purely cubic galenas from advance mining in December 2006. 5.5 x 16.5 x 19 cm.
NSMW6668 QUARTZ PRICE: $350. DRUJBA MINE, LAKI DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA Rosette-like group of quartz crystals with just a hint of green from micro inclusions of chlorite. There is no point of attachment as the specimen was found loose in the pocket. A light druse of sparkly micro rhodochrosites dust many of the quartz faces. An excellent quartz. Mined December 2006. In top condition. 7 x 11 x 13 cm.

The galenas have excellent luster and contrast very well with the quartz. The Kruchev dol Mine is producing some of the best galenas in decades from rich ore bodies that are being newly developed. NSMW6046 SPHALERITE PRICE: $220. STEFAN STEFONA MINE, ZLATOGRAD DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA Rich, cinnamon/brown, semi-transparent sphalerite with excellent luster and fine flat-faced crystals to 3 cm across. The Zlatograd area is renowned for the best of the large brown sphalerites from the district. These are coming from new production and are an excellent color varietal of sphalerite. Great color. Mined late 2005. In top condition with very minor rubbing along one edge. 3.5 x 5 x 6.5 cm.
NSMW6010 SPHALERITE PRICE: $180. STEFAN STEFONA MINE, ZLATOGRAD DISTRICT, SOUTHERN RHODOPE MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA Cinnamon brown, resinous lustered sphalerite group with individual crystals to 2.7 cm. A rare color and excellent location from the area. Newly mined in January 2006. This orebody bodes well for new specimens. In great condition with only very trivial chafing long a couple of edges. 3 x 4.5 x 7 cm.
