Romanian Minerals

Over 120 confirmed species have been found from the Maramures District. The minerals came from mines in Baia Mare, Baia Sprie, Turt, Baiut, Cavnic, Nistru, Brad, Ocna de Fier, Ruschita, Verespatek and other locations in Romania.

The section is designed in a comprehensive manner with inclusions of specimens of all species, sizes, combinations and price ranges. The premise is to consistently offer specimens from collections to enable a collector of any level to start and build a suite from this classic Eastern European location. We hope you enjoy the minerals! Regards, Ross Lillie

SEPTEMBER 2007 UPDATE:  MINING HAS CEASED. THE PUMPS ARE TURNED OFF AND THE MINES ARE FLOODING.

The Gheturi Mine is located at the extreme northwest edge of the district and as one might expect the geology is just different enough to produce a unique assemblage of minerals. Some of the best things to come out in the past few years were a series of amazing siderite pseudomorphs after calcite that occurred in a variety of habits and combinations. This is a very sculptural specimen of the shell-like casts of siderite after calcite and there are also a few chalcedony pseudos after quartz in the matrix. Very attractive and undamaged small cabinet specimen from mining in 2006. 3.5 x 7 x 10 cm.

GHETURI MINE, TURT, OASULUI MOUNTAINS, SATU MARE, ROMANIA

This is one of the most complicated pseudomorphs I have acquired from this mine. It appears that the sequence of replacement is as follows: siderite after calcite: quartz after siderite: chalcedony after quartz. Sequence based on form of the pseudomorph and comparisons with similar specimens collected at the same time period. Exceptionally rare and a perfect undamaged miniature from mining 2006. 2.7 x 3 x 3.2 cm.

There were a number of fantastic pockets found in the early 2000's that produced a wide variety of great siderite pseudomorphs after calcite. This is an excellent cabinet specimen with fine clusters of rhombs grouped in parallel over a quartz-rich matrix. The siderites have an attractive drusy sheen.  The Turt Mine is now closed and will likely not re-open but enough of these specimens were collected to still allow a great selection from the mine. Mined in 2004. One trivial nick on one crystal and one tiny pseudo is open (see top center of lower right photo) but I cannot discern if it is from damage or just an open epimorph.  5.5 x 19 x 24 cm.

NSMW6885    SIDERITE AFTER PYRRHOTITE WITH GALENA     PRICE: $125.

GHETURI MINE, TURT, OASULUI MOUNTAINS, SATU MARE, ROMANIA

The Gheturi Mine is located in extreme northwestern Romania in Satu Mare County far away from Cavnic and the main ore bodies in Maramures. For years it was relatively unknown and the fine specimens that were to come were unexpected when they began to come out just several years ago. The finest siderite pseudomorphs in Romania come from here and they rank with the best in the world. Huge crystals over 20 cm across have been found along with hundreds and hundreds of pseudomorphs of various sizes and combinations. The Gheturi Mine is not in production at the moment so specimens are coming from old stashes and collections or perhaps from some 'midnight' miners who collect after hours. This is a galena specimen with an association with a pseudomorph after pyrrhotite, 2.2 cm across. The galena displays very well with nearly equally developed cube and octahedron faces. Mined 2005. Contacted on two sides but free of damage. 3 x 4 x 6.5 cm.

NSMW6884    TETRAHEDRITE WITH CALCITE AND SPHALERITE     PRICE: $250.

BOLDUT MINE, CAVNIC, MARAMURES, ROMANIA

A combination of silvery gray tetrahedrite, lustrous black sphalerite, white balls of calcite and golden iridescent chalcopyrite.
