Product Overview
NAUMKEAG MINE, LAKE SUPERIOR COPPER DISTRICT, HOUGHTON COUNTY, MICHIGAN
The Naumkeag Mine was started in an effort to find the extension of the great Pewabic Lode that made so many investors rich with the Quincy Mine. The Naumkeag Mine was a series of exceptionally long adits with a couple of inclined shafts. A fellow infidel and I dug one of the adits out years ago and waded through chest deep, icy cold water to get into workings that had been closed for years. We found a pile of ore that was stockpiled along the drift that turned out to be quite a bonanza. This piece was one of the finest crystallized specimens in the find. Sharp, spinel twins in a fine branching form. No faults. Collected c. 1978. Ross C. Lillie Michigan Collection. 2 x 5 x 7.5 cm.
